How to Play

Desktop: keyboard controls, or two players on one keyboard. Mobile: touch controls. Play with sound on. Start with the Drummer for a wider on-beat window, and use Soundcheck to see whether you are early or late.

These are the controls for BEATDOWN. The external BEATDOWN version on Stickman Arcade may use slightly different controls.

About BEATDOWN

BEATDOWN is a rhythm-based stick-figure brawler with a hook that most fighting games never try: every punch you throw is judged against the beat. The soundtrack is generated live in your browser, and the game listens to when you press, not just what you press. On-beat hits deal 1.5× damage. Land four on-beat hits in a row and you trigger a shockwave bonus. Enemies wind up on one beat and strike on the next, so guarding at the right moment turns their attack into your counter. You can still play off-beat and clear waves, but the game sounds and feels better when you stay in time.

The roster is larger than the premise suggests. There are twelve fighters built around musical archetypes — the Drummer, Conductor, DJ, Bassist, Punk, Soprano, MC, Jazz Cat, Shredder, Virtuoso, Beatboxer and Producer — each with a passive, two specials, a cooldown skill and an ultimate called the DROP. That works out to sixty abilities. The arcade around the game adds nine art styles that redraw the fighters, venues, hit effects and menus, plus seven venues with their own rules: a rooftop with no walls, a subway where the doors slam on the downbeat, a strobe rave that goes dark between beats, a slippery festival field and a cruise ship deck that tilts with the song.

BEATDOWN is the headliner of the Stickman Arcade, a project by Thorsten Meyer. He says Claude Opus 5.5 built the entire arcade in a single day: nine games plus a stick-figure animator, about 24,500 lines of plain JavaScript with zero dependencies, no image files and no audio files. The AI also wrote 233 automated tests and browser checks that play real matches at phone, tablet and desktop sizes. BEATDOWN itself was reportedly playable in under an hour and live on his site in under two.

The arcade includes modes for solo and local play: Tour, Boss Rush, Blitz, a seeded Daily Mix and a Soundcheck practice mode with an early/late timing readout. VERSUS puts two players on one keyboard or two gamepads. It is the rare AI-generated project where the presentation, the systems and the testing all feel like one coherent product rather than a pile of demos. Play it with sound, on landscape if you are on a phone, and start with the Drummer — its passive widens the on-beat window.

How This Game Was Generated

Built by Thorsten Meyer with Claude Opus 5.5 in one day, according to his build notes. The arcade contains nine games plus an animator, about 24,500 lines of plain JavaScript, no image or audio files, and 233 automated tests plus browser checks. The developer wrote no code himself.
