How to Play

Move and interact with the arrow keys or WASD, a gamepad, or on-screen touch controls. In battle, pick commands from the menu when a hero’s ATB gauge fills; target elemental weaknesses and chain attacks to deal extra damage. The game supports English, Korean, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and Spanish.

These are the controls for Crimson Oath. The external Crimson Oath version on itch.io may use slightly different controls.

About Crimson Oath

Crimson Oath is a free SNES-style JRPG that runs in a browser tab. The developer grew up on Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger and built the kind of game that shaped those years: two chapters of story, a party of four heroes, and FF6-style ATB battles with elemental weaknesses and chain attacks. You explore, talk to characters and fight through a fantasy campaign that ends with an animated cutscene — and the whole thing is playable without a download, an account or an emulator.

The scope is the surprising part. The game has 31 music tracks and 354 sound effects, six languages (English, Korean, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and Spanish), and support for keyboard, gamepad and touch. It also loads no image or audio files at all: every sprite, tile, portrait and song is generated by code at runtime. That keeps the download tiny and makes the project a useful case study in how far an asset-free browser RPG can go. Battles use an ATB gauge rather than strict turn order, so faster heroes act more often, and elemental weaknesses and chain attacks reward planning instead of button-mashing.

The build story is equally direct. The developer says Crimson Oath was built with Claude Opus 5.5 over about four days, starting from a love of 16-bit JRPGs rather than a plan to demo a model. The result is not a tech sample: it has a two-chapter structure, animated cutscenes, a four-person party and a full battle system, and the developer is still asking players for feedback on balance — whether fights feel too easy or too grindy. That honesty is worth noting, because balance is exactly the part AI-assisted solo development finds hardest.

If you have twenty minutes and a browser, Crimson Oath is one of the most complete AI-assisted RPGs we have found on itch.io this month. It is also a good answer to the question “can AI make a real game, not a demo?” — the answer here is a small, finished, localizable JRPG with a beginning, a middle and an ending. Play it to the end of Chapter 2 if you can; the developer says that is where the best cutscene is.

How This Game Was Generated

Built by contarex with Claude Opus 5.5 over about four days, according to the developer. The game loads no image or audio files: every sprite is drawn in code, and all 31 music tracks and 354 sound effects are generated at runtime. The developer is still collecting feedback on battle balance.
